Chuck Feeney Tribute

This is some text inside of a div block.

Charles "Chuck" Feeney, 1931 to 2023, gave away more than 8 billion dollars during his lifetime, and his final and largest commitment created the seven Atlantic Fellows programs and the Atlantic Institute. This tribute gathers reflections from Fellows and staff across the global community on his life, his Giving While Living philosophy, and the legacy that will continue to shape the work for a fairer, healthier, more inclusive world.

The passing of Charles Francis Feeney, affectionately known as Chuck, has been the source of countless tributes from around the world.

Chuck was born into a modest, working-class family in New Jersey, as the Great Depression was unfolding. He was inspired by his mother's charitable impulse and later by Andrew Carnegie's essay, Wealth, which argued that the best use of one's wealth was to help others.

His last big bet was the creation of the seven Atlantic Fellows programs and the Atlantic Institute through his private foundation the Atlantic Philanthropies. Atlantic made its final grant commitments at the end of 2016 and closed its doors in 2020. Over 38 years, it invested over $8 billion in promising programs and people, and in places where it saw the chance to create opportunity and promote greater fairness and equity for all.

Atlantic Fellows and staff from the seven Atlantic Fellows programs and the Atlantic Institute collectively share their reflections on his life, his impact and lasting legacy. At the time of Chuck's death, the Atlantic Fellows community numbered 899 Fellows active in nearly 80 countries, with around 125 program and Institute staff supporting them.

Chuck's immense generosity has left a remarkable legacy that will live on as the Fellowship continues to grow. Over the next two decades, the number of Fellows is expected to grow to 2,700, all committed to bringing lasting improvements to people's lives and advancing a fairer, healthier, more inclusive world.

He donated almost all his personal fortune, more than $8bn, to causes on five continents. Initially, he wanted Atlantic's giving to be anonymous but after his identity was revealed, he decided to actively promote the Giving While Living philosophy. Big donors Warren Buffett and Bill Gates cite him as an inspiration for the Giving Pledge.

We mourn his loss but celebrate a remarkable man and a life well lived. His legacy will positively impact communities around the world for generations to come.

Djibril Moussa, Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health

Chuck made visionary contributions to the emergence of modern Ireland. His hand is in the peace process, in the transformation of Limerick as a city, the reimagining of third level education and in changing the narrative around ageing and dementia in this country. We will not see his like again.

Brian Lawlor, Site Director of the Global Brain Health Institute and Conolly Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin

Chuck Feeney was an extraordinary person, and his time on Earth benefited millions of people. In Jewish tradition, there's a lovely concept called Tzadikim Nistarim. It suggests that in every generation, there are 36 hidden righteous individuals whose purpose in life is to justify humanity's existence in the eyes of God. Even though we don't know who they are, I am sure that Chuck Feeney would certainly be at the top of that list.

Lea Tenenholz Grinberg, Faculty and Executive Committee Member, GBHI, and John Douglas French Alzheimer's Foundation Endowed Professor, UCSF

Chuck Feeney's global generosity and visionary spirit have sown seeds of equity and change through the Atlantic Fellows, globally. My thoughts and prayers are with Chuck's family during this difficult time. As an Atlantic Fellow, I witnessed first-hand the positive impact of his immense generosity and selflessness. Chuck's legacy will continue to inspire and touch the lives of countless individuals in my community and in many communities across the world, wherever Atlantic Fellows are working.

Bilal Asim, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity U.S. + Global

My work happens with people, making visual communication tools with and for people working on the frontline of health care delivery. I am so much richer from every person I meet in this Fellowship. Learning from other Fellows around the world makes me a better person.

Eliza Squibb, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity U.S. + Global

What comes to my mind when I think about Chuck Feeney is that he didn't have any intentions of being in the centre of the scene. When you give, you don't necessarily tell the people you are the one that is giving because the most important thing has to do with what you are doing. From Argentina we have a very popular phrase, from Peron, that has to do with the most important thing, to act rather than to talk or be in the centre of the scene.

Jonatan Konfino, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity U.S. + Global

In a world of inequalities and lack of equity, Chuck gave us new hope. He didn't just donate or give money to an organization to do the charity work but also invested in, built and created a family. He gave a home to those who do the charity work, the unseen leaders.

Naglaa Fathy Lithy, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity U.S. + Global

A heartfelt eulogy to Chuck Feeney, an eminent philanthropist whose altruistic giving touched many lives, including mine. His dedication to Giving While Living has set a remarkable example for all, reminding us of the power of generosity and the world-changing impact it can have.

Thank you for changing lives and making dreams come true.

Gloria Annette Aguirre, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity U.S. + Global

Chuck Feeney's philanthropy and legacy transformed my life, through the Atlantic Fellowship. It helped bring visibility to me, my work and my country. It opened up access to doors that I did not know existed. It helped me choose to be excellent! It fuelled the equity fire within me.

Shubha Nagesh, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity U.S. + Global

He gave us a system to ensure that we know that we have the support and resources to tackle any global issue. He made the small big. I grew up on the small island in Tobago with 50,000 persons. His commitment to invest in me made me want to invest more deeply in the health equity of others.

Bertrand Moses, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity U.S. + Global

A couple weeks ago, as I was at the airport on the way home from an amazing, inspiring Atlantic Institute convening in the U.K., I looked down at my feet and felt a great sense of gratitude to Chuck Feeney for dedicating his financial resources to change my life in such a transformative way. Thank you, Mr. Feeney, for sowing into the lives of social leaders around the world.

Sara Maria Pereira, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity in Southeast Asia

Kritaya Sreesunpagit, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity in Southeast Asia

To many, Chuck Feeney was a great philanthropist and humanitarian. For me, one of the fortunate few who worked with Chuck, he was much more than that. We didn't just work for Chuck, but with Chuck to realize our dreams within his. Chuck often reminded us that it is always about the people.

Le Nhan Phuong, Executive Director, The Equity Initiative

Alfredo Matugas Coro II, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity in Southeast Asia

Yvette Andrews, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity in South Africa

Three words come to mind: humility, trust and allyship. Humility because this is a man that did not want the spotlight. Trust, because The Atlantic Philanthropies gave us all these millions to do the work and trusted us to stay to mission for almost two decades. Allyship because the way we have been trusted creates an environment that is empowering and not constricting. Realeboga. Siyabonga. Enkosi.

Tracey Naledi, Chairperson, Tekano Board

I have journeyed with this Fellowship and feel grateful for the generosity of Chuck Feeney because I have been connected to this incredible community of people who come from spaces and places where historic injustices have occurred, where we can bring our full selves into conversation. Tendai Chisirimunhu, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity in South Africa

I would like to pay my deepest tribute to this unsung hero! I am in awe of the generosity of a billionaire somewhere in the U.S. who has touched the life of a girl born in an unknown town, Ngqeleni. The programme allowed me to robustly reflect on who I am. I am now an unapologetic advocate for socioeconomic development.

Siphamandla Mpikeleli, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity in South Africa

To our dearest Father, Leader, Comrade, Mr. Chuck Feeney. You touched our personal lives and that of our communities in many ways that anyone can ever imagine! You led your life with a great deal of distinction. Side sibuye sihlangane, lala kakuhle qhawe lama qhawe!

I was a young activist leader in one of post-apartheid South Africa's most consequential social movements, the Treatment Action Campaign. Atlantic Philanthropies was one of the first funders to get behind our movement's efforts to stem the destructive tide of the HIV and AIDS epidemics. Chuck's legacy today means that millions of people who would otherwise not be alive are alive. Siyabulela, Chuck.

Siphokazi Mthathi, Executive Director, Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity in South Africa

AFRE's work to foster deep relationships and solidarity among changemakers in order to build a world beyond anti-Black racism has been made possible by Chuck's generosity. Our community owes him immense gratitude.

Sebabatso Manoeli-Lesame, Executive Director, Atlantic Fellow for Racial Equity

The fact that Chuck's generosity is creating a global community that is unapologetically committed to social transformation, cross-sectoral, inclusive, and engages just about every dimension of inequality, is a rare gift indeed. With respect to racial justice specifically, this gift is all the more important because mobilizations around racial inequality are being closed down in some parts of the world.

Devon Carbado, Atlantic Fellow for Racial Equity

I wish there were more people like Chuck Feeney, who helped shape the way philanthropy should be, interested in disrupting economic systems in a way that gives communities more of a runway and allows them to actually build in the long term. Chuck has enabled that to happen on a global scale.

Elana Needle, Atlantic Fellow for Racial Equity

Chuck's commitment to a more just world, seen in the breadth and depth of The Atlantic Philanthropies' investments, facilitated crucial work to challenge anti-Black racism in South Africa and the U.S. That legacy lives on in AFRE.

Memorial Service

No items found.

A private funeral ceremony for the late Irish-American, Chuck Feeney, was held at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin, Ireland, on Friday, Dec. 8. At the burial of his ashes, those gathered heard that Chuck left the world better than he found it through his incredible compassion for the less fortunate.

The world needs the light cast by Mr. Feeney and his great humanity more than ever, said his daughter Leslie Feeney-Baily. The Irish president, Michael D. Higgins, attended the funeral, where he met Mr. Feeney's widow Helga and his five children, Juliette, Caroleen, Leslie, Diane and Patrick.

On the Saturday night (Dec. 9), dozens of the Feeney family members gathered in Dublin's Trinity College dining room at a memorial to remember the man who spent the last four decades of his life giving away his billion-dollar fortune.

Chuck was a tenacious, empathetic and inexhaustible man with an impatience for self-importance and a fundamental drive to invest in people's talents, the memorial heard.

He was a sort of Robin Hood to the people, Patrick, his son, told those attending the event organized by The Atlantic Philanthropies. Others saw him as a bit of a rebel and a peacemaker; some saw him as a sort of freedom fighter like Che Guevara. Other people thought he had taken a vow of poverty like Mother Teresa.

By the time of his death, he had donated more than $8 billion to education, medical research, health care, ageing and civil society through his Atlantic Philanthropies foundation in the United States, Ireland, Vietnam, Australia, Bermuda and South Africa.

Charles Feeney, philanthropist who gave away his billions, dies at 92. The Washington Post, Oct. 10, 2023.

For decades, the former duty-free tycoon donated nearly $8 billion to humanitarian efforts and institutions. He tried to keep it all secret. The reach of his giving while living was virtually unparalleled in its scope and diversity.

Chuck Feeney obituary. The Irish Times, Oct. 10, 2023.

Feeney's final gift to the world was to donate the remaining $740 million of his foundation to build a global network of Atlantic Fellows to advance his vision of a fairer, healthier and more inclusive society. His legacy is the philanthropic model he created, combining anonymity, freedom of action, entrepreneurship, flexibility, limited lifespan, willingness to make big bets and global impact.

Chuck Feeney was one of the greatest philanthropists ever. Gates Notes, Bill Gates, Nov. 2, 2023.

Despite his soft-spoken nature and desire for anonymity, he was always glad to talk about what he was learning in the hope of helping others. He inspired others to think about the merits of spending down a foundation's assets, or as he put it, giving while living. I'm grateful to have known and learned from Chuck.

Extracts from The Cure at Troy by Seamus Heaney

Human beings suffer, they torture one another, they get hurt and get hard. No poem or play or song can fully right a wrong inflicted and endured. History says, Don't hope on this side of the grave. But then, once in a lifetime the longed-for tidal wave of justice can rise up, and hope and history rhyme. So hope for a great sea-change on the far side of revenge. Believe that a further shore is reachable from here. Believe in miracles and cures and healing wells.

Now it's high watermark and floodtide in the heart and time to go. What's left to say? Suspect too much sweet-talk but never close your mind. It was a fortunate wind that blew me here. I leave half-ready to believe that a crippled trust might walk and the half-true rhyme is love.
